History Of Media In Kenya Media Essay

History Of Media In Kenya Media Essay receiving set was first developed in 1920 and it was strictly used by the military. David sternoff had an creative thinker of selling radio sets to consumers and RCA was the first to set up radio station all over the country in United States.Mass media means make a large number of audiences, the term mass media was coined in 1920, with the introduction of many nationwide radio networks it was improved by the circulation of many intelligence servicepapers and magazines.Mass media accommodate internet, media like video sharing, message boards, podcasts and blogs.Marshal McLuhan brought up the idea that the the medium is the message. In the past drama were the first mass media in the ancient realism and it was used by numerous cultures.Diamond Sutra was the first printed book and it was printed in china in 868D. Many books were then printed in ancient times. In 1041 in China, movable clay type was invented the first printed mass- medium was Euro pean popular prints that were printed from about 1400.Johannes Gutenberg printed his book in 1453 on a printing press utilise movable clay type. Newspapers were developed from about 1612, with the first example in English in 1620.During the 20th century mass medium, has really improved repayable to advanced technology, for example printing, film duplication and record pressing.History of Media in Kenya. The media in Kenya is a diverse and vibrant growing industry, which has been face and is still facing an uncertain future. The political transmission from British colony to independent country was mirrored by many changes in mass media in Kenya. In 1963 when Kenya endure independent, the vast majority of Kenya own television and radio stations were British and Ameri provide programmes.Kenya culture was promoted vie the mass media under the late chair of Kenya Jomo Kenyatta and more than programmes were broadcasted in Swahili. The press really suffered during the governance of the former president Daniel Moi and his one party state, which was written into the constitution in 1982, more journalists were arrested and imprisoned, because the state was worried with the media tribe challenging the government. The scene of oppression changed and the press expanded with the birth of multi- party politics in 1992, this was a response to pressure of activists and with the help of the international communities. perfunctory newspapers increased to four, the person daily was set up, and the gutter also emerged. Harsh criticisms of the state by the press went with the emergency of opposition politics. Journalist were still oppressed, scare and imprisoned by the government.A new unpopular was passed in May 2002 and it required publishers to purchase a bond for one million Kenya shillings, before make it. This move scared publishers because it was expensive for them to publish any magazine. There are four major daily newspapers published in Kenya and this areThe daily Nati on- it was complete in 1960 and it is published by the Nation media group. The first paper was seen as the champion during the governance of the former president Daniel Moi.Nation media owns Nation T.V and the East African which is a regional weekly paper with its core market in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It is the largest media house in central and East Africa. The standard formerly known as the East African standard was formal in 1902. Nowadays the standard is the critic of the government policies, it is owned by the group of businessmen associated with the former president Daniel Moi.Kenya times was established in 1983 by the KANU party.A person daily was established in 1992, it is owned by Kenneth Matiba.Broadcast.The first broadcast targeted white settlers who monitored news from their home country and other parts of the world. The first radio broadcast targeting Africans was started in 1953 it was called African Broadcasting services and carried programmes in Kiswahili, dhol uo, kikuyu, Nandi, kamba and Arabic. The Kenya broadcasting services was established in 1954, and the regional stations were set up in Mombasa Sauti ya Mvita and Kisumu lake station in 1961.There are more than 63 FM stations in Kenya that has been licensed. Radio stations mainly operate in Nairobi and its surrounding areas. The broadcasts of most commercial radio stations are made up of entertainment, phone ins programmes, let out shows and interviews.TelevisionTelevision was introduced in Kenya in 1962 and the first transmitting station was in Limuru transmitting over only a radius of 15 miles. On 1st July, 1964 through an act of parliament Kenya broadcasting corporation was nationalized and renamed the voice of Kenya. In 1970 V.O.K opened a new television station in Mombasa to electrical relay programmes and produce local dramas, music, culture and other programmes. In 1989, the Kenya parliament gave autonomy to V.O.K and changed the name to K.B.C. K.B.C known as channel one, pay tel evision channel 2 and metro television channel 31, which is usually an Entertainment television.K.T.N, Kenya television network become the first private television station in Kenya. It started broadcasting in 1989 and it is owned by a group of businessmen.Citizen T.V is owned by a businessman Samuel Macharia.Press truth.Kenya does not have a press law the press law is a carryover of what was since the colonial government. What passes for media law in Kenya is a general section 79 of the constitution that statesExcept with his own consent, no person shall be hindered in the enjoyment of his freedom of expression, that is to say, freedom hold opinions without interference. Freedom to receive ideas and tuition without interference and freedom to communicate ideas. There is nothing in the constitution that refers denotive to the media.Media censorship. There is freedom of expression that is stated in the constitution of Kenya ARTICLE 33 it states that every person has the right to seek , receive or impart cultivation or ideas, freedom of artistic creativity and academic freedom and freedom of scientific research.Censorship is merely to help journalist perform their work well, they should be able to report news or write stories which have correct facts and figures.Media censorship is mainly for checking vulgarity, violence and racism media censorship sees to it that the media is not used as a tool to attack, discriminate and humiliate people. The government that come into power n 2002 with the leader of president Mwai Kibaki has failed to fulfill its promise for the reform of media legislation. The former information minister Mutahi Kagwe, in August 2007 introduced the Media Bill to parliament which would establish a media regulatory board and media advisory board, which will replace the independent media council in Kenya. This shaft allows the information minister to appoint chairman and the members of the new government funded embody. The new body will register a ll journalists and the government license media, so that they can exert authority over them. The media bill provokes hostility among the media practioneers and owners especially in the case of the editors to reveal their sources, if there reports become the subject of court cases.Media owners, civil hunting lodge groups and the law society opposed the bill because it was putting many pressure and it was totally against the freedom of expression.Late August 2007, the bill was passed but later spurned by the president on the round that the bill limited the confidentiality of sources and therefore it was a threat to press freedom. The Communications Commission of Kenya CCK is the independent regulatory body that gives license register journalists and regulates television, radio, telecommunication and postal services.CCK is overseen by the Ministry of information, so that its independence is limited. There are non- state media regulatory bodies, like the media council of Kenya which was set up in 2004 and its a key campaigner for a self regulatory system.Kenya Union of Journalist, editors guild and Kenya correspondents association have set up media industry steering committee. expirationMedia is not static it is dynamic. With the introduction of new technology, media has really improved. The Kenya constitution should allow media practionerers to do their work without any limitations so that they can be able to nail their information well without revealing their sources. The introduction of many FM stations helps the media industry to advance and reach many people especially those in agrestic areas.Media will be and continue reaching the mass media through radio, television, internet and cable networking.

Structure And Function Of Neuron Health And Social Care Essay

Structure And Function Of pump cell Health And Social Cargon EssayWith an estimate of approximately ampere-second billion the neurons form the most basic units of the anxious(p) system and ar also cognize as the touchwood cell. The major characteristics which define a hardihood cell ar Excitability and Conductivity. Excitability refers to the ability of responding to any external stimulus by the neuron. Conductivity save is the transmission of the external stimulus through the cell and forwards. nerve cells are also sub-divided into various categories based upon their functions and also their basic body structure. 1Neuron StructureAny external stimulus sensed by the queasy system is transmitted by room of galvanising signals by the individual neurons. The neuron consists of three principal substructures the dendrites, cell body (soma) and axon. The figure downstairs shows these substructures.Fig1 Neuron and its substructures. 5Dendrite Is creditworthy for the incre ase in surface area of the neuron and reception of the scatterbrained signals by means of specialised molecules called receptors that detect the neurotransmitters from the previous neuron, sensorial part, muscle, and so on They appear as branch-like projections on the top of the cell body. Dendritic Spines are bag like structures present on the dendritic surface of some neurons. 4 kiosk Body Also known as the Soma it appears as a star shaped structure with a diameter of 20m into which numerous dendrites end and a single axon filament emerges. It consists of a large nucleus with a prominent nucleolus containing the genetic material and is the centre of sub cod of the nerve cell. 4 Ribosomes in the cell body located on the rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) produce proteins which are stored in vesicles by the Golgi body later sorting. The rER stand be seen by an ordinary light microscope after staining with a dye and is called Nissls substance. 3 The vesicles formed by the Golg i apparatus contain the precursors for neurotransmitters. Cellular respiration in the cell body is carried out by the mitochondria, which is the site for the production of the ATP the primary source of energy for the cell. Intercellular transport of proteins and nutrients is carried out by means of tube like structures which run the entire length of the cell and are known as Neurofilaments or Neurotubules. 1Axon Also known as the nerve fibre is responsible for carrying electrical nerve impulse away from the cell body. The region of the axon just below the cell body is known as the initial part or trigger z one is the site where the electrical signal is generated for its transmission to the next neuron. 2 The length of the axon varies from a few millimetres to as immense as from the head to the toes. In some neurons the length of the axons might be insulated by means of a fatty, membranous sheath also known as the Myelin sheath. The medulla ob extensiveata sheath is formed from t he surrounding cells oligodendrocytes in the Central Nervous System (CNS), Schwann cells in the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). These accessory cells (glial) enwrap themselves around the axon fibre and thereby help in increasing the speed of signal transmission and also provide a good compass point of electrical insulation to the axon. The different layers of the glial cells are known as Neuurolemmocyte while the outer layer of this multilayered sheath is known as the Neurilemma (Schwann sheath).1 The myelin sheath is formed in segments rather than one continuous layer these segments are visible along the length of the axon and are known as the Nodes of Ranvier (neurofinral nodes). 1,2 The figure below shows the multi-layered sheath which is formed around the axon by these cells.Fig2 Myelin sheath and its formation 6The axon is devoid of any protein synthesising structures since the neurotransmitters and proteins are replenished by the structures present within the soma. 3 The t erminal part of the axon branches (telodendria) into many different swollen bulb-like terminals (boutons or synaptic knobs) which contain neurotransmitters for the transmission of the neural signal onwards hence a single neuron can trigger a larger area of cells or muscle fibres at the site of action. 1, 2, 3Neuron sortingNeurons can be classified into several different groups based on their functional as well as structural characteristics. When classified on the root of functional aspects the major distinctions which can be given is with respect to the direction in which the neuron carries the signal.Afferent Neurons These neurons are considered as the sensory neurons since they are responsible for the conveying of information to the central nervous system. They might be general somatic centripetal neurons or general visceral afferent neurons. Somatic afferent neurons carry the sensory stimulus information from the skin, voluntary muscles, joint and other connective tissues to the central nervous system. However the visceral afferent neurons carry the sensory stimulus information from the various internal organs (visceral organs) to the brain. 1 They possess an extremely long axon owing to the signal transmission length to the central nervous system.2Efferent Neurons Neural cells carrying information from the autonomic nervous system to the effecter muscles and are also known as motor neurons. Like the afferent neurons these are also classified as general somatic motor(prenominal) neurons or general visceral afferent neurons. The somatic efferent neurons send the impulses to the voluntary impecunious muscles thereby causing muscle contraction. The visceral efferent neurons however send the information to the involuntary smooth muscles of the various organs and glands. 1 Like the afferent neurons efferent neurons also possess an extremely long axon owing to the signal transmission length from the autonomic nervous system to the effecter muscle fibres.2I nterneurons news report for almost 99 percent of all neurons and are called association neurons, connector neurons, or internuncial neurons. 1 They function is to convey the information from the sensory neurons to the motor neurons after serve the sensory information. The length of the axons in the interneurons differ, if they are go around and branching then they are known as local circuit neurons while if they are long then they are known as relay neurons. Local circuit neurons are concerned with the transmission of information over a short surpass while the relay neurons transmit the information over long distances. Interneurons are generally found in the Central nervous system. 1, 2Neurons can be get along classified into three separate categories based on their structural characteristics.Multi-polar neurons- neurons with several dendrites and a single axon are known as multi-polar neurons. These neurons are mostly located in the brain and spinal cord.Bipolar neurons suc h type of neurons have only a single axon and dendrite emerging from the cell body. They are located in a few places in the body such as the olfactory nerves in the upper nasal cavity and the retina of the eye.unipolar neurons these are the most common type of nerve cells found in the peripheral nervous system. They consist of only a single nerve process which splits into two with one brain leading into the brain while the other leads into the spinal cord.1The figure below shows the different structural characteristics displayed by the neurons.Fig3 Structural characteristics of Neurons. 7Neuron FunctionsThe primary function of the nerve cell is the transmission of the neural signals from the nervous system to the various parts of the body. This is do by means of electrical signals which act through the nerve cells in bands of excitation with the movement of ions in and out of the cell membrane of the nerve cell along the axon length and by means of neurotransmitters (acetylcholin e Ach) at the junction of one neuron to another or orient site (synaptic cleft).Electrical Impulse Conduction along the AxonThe neuron is said to be in a resting phase when it is not conducting any neural impulse, during such a phase the neuron is charged or polarized due to a concentration gradient across its plasma membrane. The concentration gradient is due to the differential amount of positively and negatively charged (sodium Na+, super acid K+ and chloride Cl-) ions present on either side of the plasma membrane. Due to this difference an electrical effectivenessity is developed across the plasma membrane known as the resting membrane potential. 2The resting membrane potential is typically about -70mV and is present due to the difference in the ionic concentrations of Na+, K+ and Cl-. In the general resting phase the extracellular fluid of the neuron is more positively charged than the interior of the neuron since there is higher concentration of Na+ ions on the immateria l than the inside of the neuron. In the same manner there is a higher concentration of K+ ions and negatively charged protein molecules on the inside than the outside. The ions are equal to freely pass across the plasma membrane from a region of higher to lower concentration but the relative concentration of the ions remains unending across the membranes. This is possible due to the homeostatic functions of the energy driven (ATP), self regulating transport mechanism known as the sodium potassium pump. The pumps military action increases as more sodium diffuses into the plasma membrane and it pumps three sodium ions outside the plasma membrane while pumping only two potassium molecules into the cell. gum olibanum the pump helps in maintaining the overall resting membrane potential by keeping the interior of the neuron negatively charged when compared to the exterior. Apart from the sodium potassium pumps electromotive force gated open ion channels also help in maintaining the ch arged state of the neuron by allowing the ions to pass through the membrane when the concentration of any one of the ions is very high on either side of the membrane. The conduction mechanism is very similar in both the myelinated and unmyelinated nerve cells however there are differences due to the presence of the myelin sheath. In the unmyelinated nerve cells the change in resting potential is brought about due to the presence of an impulse which might be known as the threshold stimulus. This threshold stimulus causes the change in the permeability of the sodium ions in the plasma membrane of the axon. thus a greater number of sodium ions rush into the neural cell due to the opening of the sodium ion channels and cause the depolarisation of the neural cell. The depolarisation causes the interior of the neural cell to become positively charged and makes the exterior of the cell negatively charged for a period of half a millisecond and raises the potential from -70mV in the resti ng phase to about +30mV in the action phase. The region of the plasma membrane which has been depolarised due to massive influx of the sodium ions causes the flow of genuine which further depolarises the neighbouring region by opening the voltage gated sodium ion channels and allowing the inflow of sodium ions. The sodium channels quickly deactivate shortly after the membrane has been depolarised and the inflow of sodium into the plasma membrane is stopped. The potassium ions try to escape out into the extracellular fluid in order to balance the potential outside and bring the membrane potential back to its original resting membrane potential. at once the membrane potential has been restored to the original resting potential it is said to be repolarised. thence when it is observed the wave of polarisation and depolarisation travels as a band along the length of the axon in the neuron. After each firing of the neuron there is an interval of approximately one to one and half milliseco nds before it is possible for the neuron to generate the appropriate action potential for the next depolarisation, this prison term interval is called as the refractory period. During this period the plasma membrane is being repolarised after the wave of depolarisation has passed through it. The graph showing the various levels of the electrical potential across the plasma membrane during the wave of polarisation and repolarisation is given below.Fig4 Action Potential during polarisation and depolarisation of the neuron. 8The conduction mechanism in mylienated nerve fibres is called as salutatory conduction, since the action potential appears to jump between the successive Nodes of Ranvier present along the myelin sheath. It is at the Nodes of Ranvier that the voltage gated sodium gates are super concentrated and exposed to the extracellular fluid and hence it is observed that the electrical potential jumps to these sites. 1,2The figure below illustrates this process.Fig5 Salutato ry Conduction 9Electrical Conduction at the SynapsesOnce the action potential reaches the terminating branches of the axon after travelling through the entire length of the axon, the action potential is transmitted to the next neuron or the target muscle or organ, etc. across the synaptic cleft (the junction between neurons or the target organs, muscles, glands, etc). The the nerve cell getting the action potential towards the synapse is known as the presynaptic neuron while the one carrying the action potential away from the synapse is known as the postsynaptic neuron. 1,2The transmission of neural impulse across the synapse is done by neurotransmitters (acetylcholine). These neurotransmitters can bring a change in the resting potential of the postsynaptic cells. As the action potential reaches the synaptic endings it causes the depolarisation of the presynaptic plasma membrane which causes the dissemination of the calcium ions into the presynaptic terminal. These calcium ions caus e the neurotransmitter storage vesicles to fuse with the plasma membrane and release the neurotransmitters into the extracellular region of the synapse by means of exocytosis. The flow of neurotransmitter gos only in a single direction since the presynaptic neurons only contain the neurotransmitter vesicles and no receptor sites while the post synaptic neurons contain the exact opposite. The neurotransmitters take a short interval of time in traversing the distance between the synapse and this interval is known as the synaptic delay. Upon the reception of the neurotransmitter in the receptor sites of the postsynaptic region changes start to occur in the membrane potential and a new wave of depolarisation begins in the next neuron due to change in the membrane permeability for the ions. After the reception of the neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) in the receptor site it is broken down into acetate and choline by the action of the enzyme acetylcholinestrase. The remainder of the neuro transmitters which were unable to reach the receptor sites and are stuck in the synaptic cleft are broken down by the action of proteins and enzymes. Over a period of time the acetylcholine is restored back to the presynaptic region. 1 The figure below shows the conduction of the neural impulse across the synapses by neurotransmitters.Fig6 Neural transmission at synapses 10ConclusionThe neurons thus form the basic functional unit of the nervous system transmitting and receiving the neural impulses to and from the various parts of the body to the central nervous system. They are classified into different categories based upon their structure and direction of conduction of the nerve signal. The nerve cells are surrounded by many accessory cells which provide insulation, support and nutrition to the nerve cells. Through the essay the basic structure of the neuron was explained showing the different substructures present within the neuron and also the mechanism of nerve impulse transmis sion through the neuron was explained.

Conflicts in the Epic of Beowulf Essay -- Epic of Beowulf Essay

Beowulf the Conflicts J.D.A. Ogilvy and Donald C. Baker in Beowulfs Heroic Death comment on the heros blameworthiness in his final mesh . . .the author describes Beowulf and the dragon lying dead side by side and observes rather sententiously that it was a bad line of business fighting with a dragon or disturbing his hoard. Beowulf, he adds, had paid for the treasure with his life. Some commentators seem to consider this passage, combined with Wiglafs remarks about Beowulfs insistence on fighting the dragon alone, as a connoisseurism of Beowulfs conduct (69). Beowulf contains considerable conflict, both external and internal. Conflict is how one describes the kind between the protagonist and antagonist in a literary work (Abrams 225). There is also another type of conflict which takes place within the psyche of a given character. These two types of conflict occur within this poem. H. L. Rogers in Beowulfs Three Great Fights expresses his opinion as a literary critic rega rding conflicts in the poem The superhuman forces are Fate, the heathen gods, or the Christian God conflicts between them and the heros character are frequently found. . . .The treatment in the three great fights of the motives of weapons, treasure and society implies a moral idea in which the poet believed that a man should not trust in the things of this world, for they leave fail him. Another aspect of this idea comes out clearly in the account of the first fight that a man should trust rather in God and in the natural powers God gives him, for these will not fail him(234-37).
